Biography
I am a geometer, mathematician, professor at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, and Executive Vice President for Research at Tohoku University in Japan. I am also an executive member of the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation of the Japanese Cabinet Office and a member of the Science Council
of Japan. I graduated from the University of Tokyo and received a doctorate of sciences in 1990. I started my academic career as lecturer and then associate professor at Toho University. I moved to Tohoku University as an associate professor in 1999 and was promoted to full professor in 2004 in the Institute of Mathematical Science. Since 2012 I have been the director of the Advanced Institute for Materials Research, which was established under the World Premier International Research Center Initiative in 2007, and led promotion of mathematics– materials science collaborations. I was president (2015–17) of the Mathematical Society of Japan—the first woman president.
