Biography

Paulina Carmona-Mora, PhD, is a research scientist at the Department of Neurology and MIND Institute at the University of California-Davis in Sacramento, CA, USA. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry in Chile and earned her PhD in Medical Sciences in Australia. Dr. Carmona-Mora's research is focused on understanding gene expression and regulation in neurological and developmental disorders using molecular and genomic tools. Currently, her work involves transcriptomic profiling in blood samples of stroke patients to discover early diagnostic biomarkers for improving patient outcomes, while deepening the understanding on the molecular pathogenesis of this disease.

Dr. Carmona-Mora is also deeply committed to global affairs and increasing diversity in the scientific community. She is involved in a number of international and interdisciplinary initiatives working in projects related to science advice and science diplomacy. As a member of the Global Young Academy, she currently co-leads the Science Diplomacy in the Americas working group, the Global State of Young Scientists Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Science Leadership Program for Latin America. In addition, she has served as a mentor for underrepresented, refugee and undocumented scientists in various institutions and volunteered as North and Central America representative for Ekpa'palek, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Latin American students and young professionals. Dr. Carmona-Mora's dedication to these causes highlights her commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in science and beyond.
